SPACE
Links checked 19th September 2011
This is the Powers Of Ten sequence, which starts at the size of the Universe, and then gradually zooms in. It is great; it will work automatically, while you talk, or just watch!
LIVES OF STARS
This has, amongst other things, three quite good animations on the life of small and large stars.
Animated film of the life of our Sun.
Animation comparing one star's life with another e.g. Earth with a giant star.
Build your own star, and then see how it develops. Clever.
THE BIG BANG
The Red Shift shown with spectral lines.
Basic Doppler effect wave-front applet.
Oscillating Doppler shift in the spectrum from an orbiting star.
SATELLITES
{Being updated; back in early 2012. This shows a huge variety of the actual satellites orbiting the Earth, in all their different orbits - beautiful. (Note: If there are no satellites, try selecting 'Satellite', 'Select', and then 'View All ')}
Set your own 'satellite' going with your choice of velocity, and see what happens.
The familiar link between terrestrial projectiles and satellite orbits as v increases, is well shown by this one - with the projectile setting off faster and faster from the high tower at the north pole.
Finding out about Envisat, the European Space Agency's satellite, observing land, sea, and atmosphere.
IMAGES OF SPACE
Hubble Telescope Images: Galaxy Cluster; Galaxy In A Field Of Stars; Globular Cluster; Horse's Head Nebula; Deep Space Galaxies.
THE NIGHT SKY
Surf the night sky, with Google.
Wikisky for exploring objects in the night sky.
COMETS
This shows a comet's journey through the Solar System and round the Sun. You can pause the applet to look at, for example, the direction of the comet's tail. The track is left-over small rocky bits of the comet - and when the Earth happens to pass through it, we get a meteorite shower (which is also shown by the applet)
ASTEROIDS
An asteroid.
The asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter.
PLANETS
An animated Solar System - excellent! Here is an animation of each planet's Moons (Have a look at Saturn's outer Moons - amazing!)
This site is a very large collection of images, and short films, of the objects in the solar system. There is also a lot of text information on the objects.
Looking at things in the solar system from different viewpoints e.g. What does the Sun look like from Mars?
Europa, a moon of Jupiter.
